La. Urges Corps To Stop Dumping Dredged Material

NEW ORLEANS -- State officials are urging the Army Corps of Engineers to stop discarding sediment it dredges from the Mississippi River and use more of it to restore Louisiana's eroded wetlands.

Members of Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration accused the Corps on Monday of wasting up to 20 million cubic yards of dredged sediment annually by dumping it into the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The state says up to 10 square miles of wetlands could be built with sediment that is being discarded. The Corps says it has created 25,000 acres of wetlands with dredged material over the past 20 years.

Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle is asking U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to intervene in the state's dispute with the Corps.
